Walmart is an international retail company headquartered in the state of Arkansas, United States. Today, Walmart has over 11,000 stores in 28 countries and approximately 2.2 million employees, and was founded by Sam Walton in 1962. According to 2015 data, the company’s net income is 16.363 billion dollars, and the Walton family continues the management.
An employee of the retail company JCPenney, Sam Walton purchased a small chain known as Ben Franklin Stores from the Butler brothers in 1945. Walton’s primary goal was to increase sales rates by lowering the profit margin on his products and to make his company’s name known as much as possible.
Although this practice sometimes caused Walton financial difficulties, he always managed to survive by finding wholesalers who sold goods much cheaper. By 1962, Walton, who had a disagreement with the property owner of his store and was forced to vacate the building, opened his new store named “Walton’s Five and Dime” in the city of Bentonville, Arkansas. Following this major change, the store’s luck turned, and by 1968, a total of 24 “Walmart’s Five and Dime” locations were opened within the borders of the state of Arkansas. In the middle of the first five years, Walton’s store chain had crossed the Arkansas borders, and one store each began serving in the states of Missouri and Oklahoma.
Following the establishment of Walmart, the company grew rapidly in the 1970s and 1980s, rising to the top of the sector and opening branches in almost every state in America. Then, in 1995, it entered the South American market, specifically in Argentina and Brazil, and in 1999, it entered the European market with a branch opened in England. Thus, Walmart gained international fame starting from 1995.
In order to increase its share in the European market, the company recently opened branches in Germany as well, but was unsuccessful and had to withdraw. Despite this, the company currently continues its operations under the name Walmart in the United States and Canada, Walmart de México y Centroamérica in Mexico, Asda in England, Seiyu in Japan, and Best Price in India.”
