GoPro, which began its operations in San Mateo, California in 2002, was founded by Nick Woodman. Born in California in 1975, Woodman is originally from an athletic background as someone who has loved surfing and been actively involved in it since his youth. However, in addition to actively surfing during his high school years, the t-shirts he sold during football matches to provide a budget for the surf club are proof that he also had an entrepreneurial side.
In addition to this mobile vending, two website attempts where he planned to sell electronic products and organized games with prize money further accustomed him to starting his own business.

Travel Makes Woodman a Millionaire
In addition to earning his own money, Nick Woodman never lost his passion for surfing, and the inspiration that turned his luck around came to him thanks to this passion. During a trip to Australia and Indonesia for surfing and vacation purposes, Woodman tried to capture images while surfing by taping a 35mm camera to his palm. When he realized the difficult situation he and other surfers faced in obtaining quality footage, the idea of producing practical and useful action cameras for extreme athletes came to his mind. As a result, GoPro was founded.
The initial financing for the establishment of GoPro was provided by Nick Woodman himself and his girlfriend (now his wife) Jill, by selling necklaces they bought from Bali in California. Later, Woodman’s mother invested $30,000 and his father invested $200,000 into the business; Woodman paid these back with the first profits he earned.
Owner of GoPro and Current Status
Although it was founded in 2002, the company spent its first years in the design and project phases and began selling its first cameras in 2004. Thanks to these systems that provided great convenience for extreme athletes, GoPro achieved great success and began to grow rapidly. The company, which sold $150,000 worth of products with its first systems, reached a billion-dollar sales volume in a short time thanks to subsequent digital camera systems and various products.
Today, the CEO of GoPro is still its founder, Nick Woodman. Thanks to the capital it obtained, GoPro acquired CineForm, another camera software company, in 2011.
