Since the beginning of the modern era, the secret services of countries have been among the institutions that people hear about the most. The crimes against humanity they commit from time to time, the unethical scandals and speculations they are involved in, and sometimes the secret or open conflicts they experience with the secret services of other countries make these institutions and organizations the focus of attention. Especially for the press-media and conspiracy theorists… Are there higher authorities than these institutions, of whose activities even governments cannot be fully aware? By whom and how are the struggles between them supervised and interpreted? How do we know that they do not abuse the society they claim to serve in even worse ways or apply manipulations to it? These are difficult questions to answer, of course…
Perhaps these questions will become partially clear decades later; let them wait for now. In today’s article, we will talk about one of the world’s largest secret security organizations.
An organization that is the inventor of many aviation-space, computer technologies, and even partially the internet, including those open to the public today: the NSA… So, where does the history of this organization date back to? Who is the founder of the NSA? By whom were its foundations laid? Here is the history of this unsupervised organization that has surrounded the world with cyber networks…
In what year was the NSA founded?
As a matter of fact, you know it is not possible to separate such institutions from each other with sharp lines. In other words, a certain intelligence agency that emerges on a specific date is definitely a continuation of something that existed before it. Or a combination of several, or one of the components of a previous single piece.
Therefore, we will also need to briefly mention the history before the name NSA. However, for those who are curious about its establishment directly under the name NSA: the NSA was founded in the USA on November 4, 1952.
However, its history before taking this name extends back to 1917. In 1917, the US Government entered World War I by declaring war on Germany. As a necessity resulting from this, it established a department named “Cable and Telegraph” in military intelligence. This Washington-based division carried out intelligence work on communication and correspondence throughout the war as far as the opportunities of that time allowed.
In the years leading up to World War II, this institution continued its evolution and continued its work throughout the 1940s in direct proportion to developing technology.
Since information and communication technologies were not as advanced back then, it was sufficient to gather them all under one roof, of course.. As a result of this situation, the department in question was named the Armed Forces Security Agency (AFSA) on May 20, 1949.
This name did not last very long for the organization, which served for all kinds of telegraph, communication, correspondence, and intelligence for the internal and external security of the USA under the name AFSA. As we mentioned in the first paragraph, only 3 years later, in 1952, it took the name NSA (National Security Agency) and began to serve under this name.
Today, the NSA is one of the largest intelligence agencies of the USA and the world. It generally focuses on cryptography, signals intelligence, information technology, and wiretapping. Therefore, it can be said to be the organization that collects the most data, taps the most phones, and conducts the most technical surveillance in the world.
According to statistics kept, the NSA had the capacity to listen to 3,000,000 calls per year even in the 1990s. As a result of a scandal that emerged recently, it was revealed that they listened to millions of civilians without any permission or justification. We wait with impatience to see what the new scandals of these unsupervised organizations will be in the coming years…”
