Who Founded Nutella?

This wonderful taste is the success of a person named Pietro Ferrero, who was born in the sea-facing region of northwestern Italy. During that time, specifically during and after World War II, a cocoa crisis broke out in Europe. Taking advantage of this crisis, the bakery owner Pietro created the world’s first chocolate produced from hazelnut paste. This food, named “Pasta Gianduja,” which resembles chocolate but contains very little cocoa, is similar in consistency to our mesir paste. Exactly 300 kilograms of this food were sold within the first year.

Later, Pietro Ferrero added more cream to this food, making it less sticky and less stretchy, called “SuperCreme.” It was at those moments that this hazelnut chocolate madness began in Italy. However, something was missing. Our European countries (other than Italy) were even more fond of chocolate. Pietro Ferrero’s son, Michele, made this food (Super Creme), which reminded one of nothing more than hazelnut paste in color and consistency, suitable for the European market. Now, the name of this legendary food would be “Nutella.”

This first Nutella compote was produced on April 20, 1964. The madness that continued in Italy then spread to France, Germany, and all other European countries.

To prevent the spread of this legendary food, which contains palm oil, skimmed milk, sugar, cocoa solids, and of course hazelnut paste, the French government introduced a 400% tax on “palm oil.” Because Nutella uses almost all of the palm oil in the country, this tax was referred to in the press as the “Nutella Tax.” Nutella currently consumes 25% of the world’s hazelnut production on its own. For this reason, Turkey, one of the world’s largest hazelnut producers, also gets its share of this.

WHO IS THE OWNER OF NUTELLA? The Italian-origin family known as the Ferrero family currently manages Nutella as a family business. Nutella, which realizes sales of over 4.5 billion dollars every year, generates more than 350 million dollars in net profit from these sales. Moreover, this Ferrero family is known as a family that is closed to the outside, conservative, and has strict rules.
